He also engages in activities in Japan, starting with the exhibition "Una Volta" at Recent Gallery in 1996. Hirose has held "Lemon Project 03" at The Ginza Art Space in 1997 and "PARADISO" in 1998 at Art Tower Mito where he showed his works as a voyage of communication through the five senses in which he questioned all the kinds of relationships existing between human beings and also between things, using such key words such as fragrance and slit. In March 1999 Hirose was planning to fill both Sagacho Exhibit Space and sagacho bis on the first floor with his newest works based on the same theme, but further developed. There were also be a collaborative work entitled "T.U.A." with Satoshi Ueda, an architect. Their expression changes itself from a gallery exhibition to an architectural space and then leaps into the cityscape without exercising any limits. They were present the new possibilities available by taking an examination of the space between art and architecture and that between art and the city.
Project A.P.O.
A.P.O. takes its name from the capital letters of the Italian words meaning "smell," as follows:
Aria: a scent which represents both atmosphere and image
Profumo: a physical smell which stimulates the five senses
Odore: an odor or smell which has an abstract meaning - a word representing something between the above two meanings
Satoshi Hirose Solo Exhibition "A.P.O."
Venue: Sagacho Exhibit Space and sagacho bis
In the main gallery, new works, including a huge carpet and a scented work ware to be presented while in sagacho bis, downstairs, small works such as the artist's "SKY Series" was exhibited.
Collaboration "T.U.A. 1"
Planning: Satoshi Ueda
Venue: The roof-top of the Shokuryo Bldg.
Spaces such as roof-tops ware unstable sites for the support of city life and are usually neglected. At this exhibition/collaboration tents appeared in on the roo-ftop and serve to awaken our senses. Reservations ware required for those wishing to spend a night there on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Collaboration "T.U.A. 2"
Planning: Satoshi Hirose
Venue: Waterways and Inner-Canals of Koto Ward
Hirose re-examines the complex and diverse thing we call "city space." A fishing boat specially built for the project turned into a moving space for those who wish to experience the memories and fragrance of the city.
